What is the cost of housing at Reed College?

Price structure for Housing Registration through Reed College

Housing at Reed College is a package deal including room and board. That means the per day rate includes three meals a day and you must be on the full meal plan if you're staying on Campus. You can't adjust your rate based on the meals you actually eat. However, Reed does make an adjustment to your total fee based on your departure and arrival times. When you register for housing on line your fee is calculated automatically.

When can I register online?
The Reed conference housing website is https://info.reed.edu/cep/event_room.taf the place to register your housing. UPDATE: Reed will be closing registration on 7/24/07 at 5pm and will not accept registrations after that date or last-minute on-site registrations. As of 7/23/2007, less than 15 beds are left.

To help you plan your costs, below are some examples.

"Ben" arrives on Sunday in time for dinner, and leaves on Friday after lunch. That’s 5 nights x $56.50= $282.50 He could subtract Sunday’s breakfast and lunch but add Friday’s breakfast and lunch. That’s a wash, so his subtotal is $282.50. He pays a one-time linens fee of $8, and Ben wants a couple of extras: fan for $10 and a desk lamp for $5. Ben will be paying Reed College $305.50. Suppose Friday comes, and Ben decides he’d like to eat dinner on campus before he takes off. He can choose to stay and just pay cash in the dining hall for dinner. It’s $8.50.

"Sarah" is coming for Pre Conference, staying for Monday of Conference and leaving before dinner Monday night. She plans to arrive on campus late Thursday night (after dinner). 4 nights x $56.50= $226, subtract 3 Thursday meals ( $7, $8, $8.50) but add Monday breakfast and lunch ($7, $8). Her one-time linens fee is $8, she wants a fan and a phone in her room: $226-$8.50+$8+$10+$10= $245.50.

What is the setup of bathrooms in the housing at Reed College?

Floors are co-ed, but bathrooms can be designated Men's and Women's. It's hard to say exactly how many people you would share a bathroom with, because it all depends on how many people are placed on each floor and which bathroom you end up using. However, mathematically, it’s roughly 5 rooms (persons) per toilet. Different bathrooms have 1, 2 or 3 toilets in them along with sinks and shower stalls too. Our group will mostly be housed in Steele and Sullivan (aka Steele East and West or Naito and Sullivan), also Bragdon. On Steele's second floor, there are approximately 30 rooms on a floor and 3 bathrooms serving the floor. Pictures and basic info on residence halls can be found here:

http://web.reed.edu/facilities_and_grounds/index.html Please also see the Where can I get more information about Reed College? section for video link.

What other amenities are included with Reed housing?

Our group will be assigned to residence halls built around 1998. They include social areas with sofas perfect for an ad hoc meeting or hanging out with your colleagues in the evening. They also have coin operated laundry facilities and small, shared kitchen areas that include a refrigerator and stove.

What if I stay off campus? What are my housing and meals options?

Meals
If you plan to stay off campus and want to just eat lunches and a few dinners on campus, you can do that; you are a commuter. Meals cost $7 for breakfast, $8 for lunch, and $8.50 for dinner. In order for Reed to plan how much food to buy, it’s critical that we give them a good idea of how many commuters will be in our group. Please be sure to check the appropriate box on your Conference Registration form. Curious about the food? Visit http://www.bamco.com/.

Off campus Housing
If you’re bringing your family to Portland, consider one of Portland’s downtown hotels. You’ll be close to all the wonderful shops, restaurants and attractions to keep your family entertained all day. Some favorites are Hotel Vintage Plaza, Hotel Monaco (formerly 5th Ave Suites), and Hotel deLuxe (formerly the Mallory). Lots of info on hotels, Portland attractions and package deals can be found at http://www.travelportland.com/.
