Charles Scott Sherrington’s work on the physiology of inhibition provided one of the theoretical underpinnings for Moshe’s concept of reversibility, which he defined as “the fine control of excitation and inhibition.” The principle of inhibition—that a nerve can actively prevent its muscle from contracting—was upon first observation considered “too strange to be believed.” Sherrington showed it to be a fundamental mechanism underlying all neural activity, and described its action with mathematical precision and poetic sensibility.
This program offers a lively, experiential overview of Sherrington’s discoveries and relates them to present-day studies of movement and neural function via games, sensorimotor experiments, and classic Awareness Through Movement® lessons focusing on breath, eye movements, and balance.
Michael Krugman, MA (1987) founded the Sounder Sleep System in 1999, now taught by over 250 instructors in twelve countries. He teaches, lectures, and consults on sleep, alertness, relaxation, and industrial safety issues. He is the author of The Insomnia Solution and the “Rest Assured” insomnia self-help program available from http://www.soundersleep.com.
