We now know that our brain evolved to rapidly integrate negative experiences. In Body and Mature Behavior, Moshe Feldenkrais makes a brilliant connection between our reaction to the fear of falling, the withdrawal of an organism from a strong stimulus, and the body pattern of anxiety. When we adapt or habituate to fear and anxiety, a particular neuromuscular and skeletal pattern is formed, and our involuntary nervous system becomes sympathetic dominant, creating a state of internal stress.

Simultaneously, there is an inhibition of the antigravity muscles, and this chronic muscular contraction influences the sensation behind every movement, creating a pervasive feeling of difficulty and effort. Our everyday “in the moment” experience is effected; emotionally, psychically, physiologically and cognitively.

This adaptive pattern of anxiety and fear is ubiquitous, embodied to one degree or another in nearly everyone. This workshop will demonstrate how both Awareness Through Movement® and Functional Integration® are uniquely situated to be effective tools in the amelioration of anxiety and for changing the deeply rooted neuromuscular patterns linked to anxiety. We will look closely at the current understanding of “anxiety” in both neuroscience and physiology, and see how this knowledge can impact the practice of the Feldenkrais Method®. You will learn how Dr. Feldenkrais used primitive synergistic muscular relationships to restore the nervous system to an optimal state of parasympathetic dominance, thus creating a more balanced internal organization and establishing a state of inner and neuromuscular harmony in which breathing becomes slow and full, movement becomes easier and more pleasurable, and acture spontaneously finds a new, healthier equilibrium.

David Zemach-Bersin is one of Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais’s original American students and studied closely with Dr.
Feldenkrais from 1973-1984 in the U.S., Europe, and at the Feldenkrais Institute in Israel. He has been involved with the practice and development of the Feldenkrais Method® for more than 30 years, and is one of the world’s foremost Feldenkrais Teachers and Trainers. See more at
