The Feldenkrais Institute is excited to host an advanced training for Feldenkrais Practitioners with Senior Feldenkrais Trainer Jerry Karzen. As Moshe Feldenkrais’ traveling companion and assistant, Jerry played an important role in the development of the Feldenkrais Method® in the United States. Jerry rarely teaches in New York, so this is a very special opportunity to study and learn with him.
Many people spend 14+ hours a day sitting, and Dr. Feldenkrais often worked with people in a seated position. This workshop will help you to develop a clear functional understanding of the skeletal and muscular dynamics involved in sitting. As a Practitioner, this will help you in two distinct ways: you will learn how to improve the sitting organization of your clients, and you will also learn how to work with people in a sitting position in order to improve some of their other important functions.
While assisting Dr. Feldenkrais, Jerry had an opportunity to observe Moshe many times as he worked with students in sitting. We will explore sitting as it relates to turning, reaching, twisting around oneself and coming to stand. This will help us to create more comfortable “power” sitting for people who need to sit for long periods of time. We will also explore the ways in which Functional Integration while seated can be used to alleviate such conditions as knee injuries and lower back discomfort. To illuminate the themes of this workshop, Jerry will share and explain relevant videos of Dr. Feldenkrais giving Functional Integration® lessons.
Jerry Karzen, M.A., is highly regarded for his ability to interpret and explain Dr. Feldenkrais’ Functional Integration lessons. He is known for his clear and concise teaching, incorporating an open-ended, exploratory, and non-directive style. Jerry has a M.A. in Philosophy from the University of Illinois, and worked as an epidemiologist for both the US Public Service and the World Health Organization. From 1975-1977, he was a member of Dr. Feldenkrais’ first U. S. training program and from 1976 - 1983 studied with Dr. Feldenkrais at the Feldenkrais Institute in Tel-Aviv. At Dr. Feldenkrais’ request, he organized Dr. Feldenkrais’ last teacher training program in Amherst, MA. He was the first Executive Director of the Feldenkrais Foundation and has also served as President of the eldenkrais Guild® of North America. Chosen by Dr. Feldenkrais to be a Trainer in 1982, he has been the Director for more than 25 Feldenkrais Training Programs in nine different countries, and has taught advanced trainings for Feldenkrais Practitioners in Europe, Asia and South America. Jerry is currently the Director of trainings in Germany and Brazil, and lives in Hawaii, on the island of Maui.
