Getting To Know the Hip Joints

Find how new options for movement can arise as our internal (self) image begins to match our personal structure more closely. The hip joints lie deep below the surface, surrounded by some of the largest, strongest muscles and their precise location is often vague in our awareness. By more accurately perceiving the hip joints in action we can bring more stability, flexibility and power to our movements. We’ll explore exercises that can uncover a deeper more inclusive sense of our hip joints in our movement at large.
In the subtitle to Dr. Feldenkrais’ book Awareness Through Movement, he describes the process as “Easy-to-Do Health Exercises to Improve Your Posture, Vision, Imagination, and Personal Awareness.” In these structured movement lessons, the teacher uses a combination of pleasant, purposeful movement and guided attention to lead the class through particular patterns of movement and action. Unlike traditional exercise, where the objective is to burn calories, stretch or train willpower for its own sake, Awareness Through Movement® lessons teach us how to reduce unnecessary muscular effort and improve our awareness of our whole self in action. This emphasis on sensory learning results in movement that is more flexible, pleasurable and free from aches and pains.
Classes are open to everyone, no experience necessary. Please wear socks and warm clothing that allows for easy movement.
