The European, North American and Australian Training Accreditation Boards recommend the following policy change to the International Training Accreditation Guidelines.
This draft will be posted on the internet for a period of 90 days during which time members of the community (including individuals, guilds, associations and TAB parent bodies) may make comments.

Background:
Since 1995, Training Programs have been asked by the TABs to follow a suggested make-up policy, but we never reached the stage of having an internationally ratified policy; nonetheless, most Educational Directors have complied with the 1995 NATAB policy. The TABs have felt for over 10 years that there is a strong need for more specific guidelines. The intent of the new recommended policy is to insure that time missed will be adequately made up, while at the same time giving adequate flexibility to Educational Directors.
Current policy:
"41. Trainees may miss no more than five (5) days in any year, and no more than ten (10) days during the whole course of the training program, without having to make formal arrangements with the trainer or educational staff to make up missed class time. The trainee, however, is responsible for the content of the missed material. Trainees must make up all additional missed time with assistance of the educational director and the training program teachers.
When an entire sequence is made up in another training program, it is expected that the learning material be comparable, both in content and stage in the training process. Make up work is to be done as soon as possible."
Proposed revision:
The proposal is to delete all the existing language, and replace with the following:
"41. Makeup Policy
Students are responsible for learning the content from all time missed.
A. Occasional Time Missed
- If the time missed is up to 5 days/25 hours in one year, or 10 days/50 hours in the course of the training program, and comprises an entire segment or week of the training, the student must make arrangements with the Educational Director to make up the time and content.
- Trainees who miss more than 5 days/25 hours in one year, or 10 days/50 hours in the course of the training program, must make a formal, written agreement with the Educational Director regarding how the student will makeup the content and the missed time. Makeup plans for students who have missed more than 10 days/50 hours must include at least 50% live teaching for every day over 10 or every hour over 50.
- The make-up work shall be completed as soon as possible. In no case, shall a trainee begin the third year without having made up missed time and content from the first year, nor begin the fourth year of the training without having made up all missed time from the second year.
- No student may graduate from a training without having made up all missed time and content to the satisfaction of the Educational Director.
- Any exceptions to the above policy must be submitted to the accrediting TAB by the Educational Director for approval before implementation.
B. Late Start
- No person shall join a training program, having missed more than the first year (40 days/200 hours) of the program. Students who join a program late may not use the allowed 5 days/25 hours of absence in one year in counting their makeup time -- this was in the last version.
- The Educational Director has the same responsibility for makeup sessions that he or she has for a full training program, as outlined elsewhere in this document. [see section #30]
- The Educational Director is responsible to ensure that the duration and content of the makeup adequately substitute for the time and content the trainee missed.
- The Educational Director must approve any plan to make up missed time and content.
- Trainees who join the training within the first 10 days or 50 hours of the first year must make a formal written agreement with the Educational Director regarding how the student will make up the content and the missed time.
- When the student joins the training after the first 10 days or 50 hours of the first year of the training program, the time and content may be made up in one of the following ways:
- Trainees may attend a make-up session(s) specific to their own training. Such a makeup shall provide the same number of days/hours of training as were missed. The content and stage of the learning process shall be comparable to the program from which the trainees intend to graduate.
Under the guidance and direction of the Educational Director, the live teaching days shall be taught by certified trainers, or by trainer candidates who were present at the entire first year, or assistant trainers who were present at the entire first year, and have at least 80 days of experience assisting in trainings.
Audio or video tape of all missed class time must be provided and used for home study. The Educational Director may exempt tapes that are duplicated by the live teaching. Home study includes actually doing all ATM lessons and listening to all lectures. Listening to tapes as background to other activity is not permissible.
- Trainees may attend another training for a number of days/hours equal to the number of days/hours missed. To ensure that the material is comparable to the program from which the trainees intend to graduate, both in content and stage in the learning process, the segment shall be agreed upon by both Educational Directors. The trainees must attend the make-up training as full participants, with the same access to all teachers and materials that all trainees in that program have. They may not attend as visitors or be restricted in participation of any educational process, including receiving Functional Integration lessons.
- Trainees may make up missed time by combining home study and live teaching. Such a makeup must meet the following criteria:
- There must be at least 1 day of live teaching provided for every 2 days of missed class.
- Under the guidance and direction of the Educational Director, the live teaching days shall be taught by certified trainers, trainer candidates, or assistant trainers with 80 days of experience assisting in trainings.
- The live teaching portion shall include supervision of all the hands-on work that was part of the original program.
- Audio or video tape of all missed class time must be provided and used for home study. The Educational Director may exempt tapes that are duplicated by the live teaching. Home study includes actually doing all ATM lessons and listening to all lectures. Listening to tapes as background to other activity is not permissible.
- During the course of the make-up home study period, the trainee must have ready access to a faculty member chosen by the Educational Director and acting under his or her direction and guidance. Both live and telephone contact are acceptable.
- Trainees must document their use of the material; a log or journal could be used for this purpose. There must be review of this documentation with the trainee by the faculty member; included in the review must be time to answer questions that have arisen for the trainee from the material.
- The make-up work shall be completed as soon as possible. The trainee must make up all missed time from the first year before beginning the fourth year.
- Any exceptions to the above policy must be submitted to the accrediting TAB by the Educational Director for approval before implementation.
The TABs also propose adding an additional point to section 16 of TAGs, which begins "The [training accreditation] proposal shall include:"
